Forty-Fifth Spool of Thread - [Voice/Action]

[There's a bit of a static feed as the journal turns on, and Shiki doesn't say anything for a moment. She's busy reading over everything from the last few days, but she finally decides to talk to the village at large.]

So. Hypothetical question. ...how long is too long to wait? For people, for objects, for anything. Give me your thoughts on this.

It's fall now, isn't it? I should get back to decorating. So another question...favorite thing about Halloween? Decoration-wise, holiday-wise, anything. This is pretty important.

[Important in the sense that when she's done addressing the journal, she's busy flitting about her shop. She's been spending the last few days rearranging all of the furniture and putting up new shelves and such with Haruhi's help. And now. There are fake maple leaves all over the walls. And outside. Along with some cut-out paper pumpkins strung along the walls. Villagers are free to find her outside on the porch of All Passions staplegunning things to the building and such.]

You know what? You and I should carve pumpkins when it gets closer to Halloween. Maybe convince Haruhi to let the whole Brigade do it. What do you think?

That'd be kinda cool. [He's never done crafting quite like that, but how hard could it be?] I wonder if there'd be that many pumpkins available, though? They are pretty big.

We'll find some. It can't be that hard, right? Maybe Haruhi will know where to get some. [That, or she can wish them into reality.] You've never really done the Halloween kind of stuff before?

You mean, besides all the stuff forced on us by the Malnosso? [A pause.] Not really. We don't have Halloween back in my world.

I'll keep an eye out for pumpkins in the store, though. I wonder if we can keep them from rotting if we start gathering them early.

I'm pretty sure it's just an Earth thing, but it's way more fun than what the Malnosso spring on us. I mean they got some parts right with the costumes and stuff, but usually people are allowed to pick their own. Costumes and trick-or-treating and candy and everything.

Depends. How soon do they start rotting anyway?

It sounds nice -- celebrating it in a normal way, I mean. Does everyone celebrate it that way? Children and adults?

Hmm... I think they'll be fine for at least a month if we don't carve them. If we want to be safe, we'd need to freeze 'em.

Yeah mostly. I mean the adults usually have different parties and their costumes are a little crazier, and trick-or-treating's usually just for kids but otherwise yeah it's the same.

Frozen...pumpkins. We'd have to find a freezer big enough for all of them but that could totally work. Maybe I should start taking costume orders too, just in case. Who knows what they'll do to us this year.

So I guess the Malnosso get some parts about celebrating the holiday right. [Even if the end product is really creepy.]

I guess if we really need one, I can make a container that'll keep them frozen. [That ... would require replicating how a freezer worked, which could be an interesting project.] But the main thing will be gathering them and finding a place to keep them.

Some parts. It's kind of like how on Valentine's Day everyone falls in love. That part's sort of right. They just like to make us miserable.

You're just really good at making things, aren't you? [Didn't Haruhi mention that Leon helped with the teleporter? Smart kid.] Too bad we can't find like a pumpkin patch or something to store them.

...though technically our house has an extra bedroom we could stick them in if we needed to.

It's like they twist the concept enough to make us not like the holiday anymore. [A sigh.]

It helps pass the time. [Something of a verbal shrug, but he's pleased by the comment.]

[But extra bedroom?

...Oh crap.] Oh. Neku's? [It's the weakest, most hesitant question he's asked in awhile.]

Totally. At least they haven't completely wrecked Christmas. And even if your building stuff is just a way to pass the time, it's really helpful.

[But when she realizes that he's come to that conclusion, she's finding herself mentally berating Leon for being so smart. There's a small nod and she's busy trying to brush off the fact that she's upset all over again.] Yeah. I think...I just have to accept he's gone for good.

[He looks uncomfortable once he's realized the way the conversation's gone, but he doesn't just want to brush off her comments. He'd gone through this kind of stuff before himself...]

I don't know. You don't have to accept it. [...Maybe he should filter this. Wasn't this getting into sensitive territory or something?]

[Pretty much, but Shiki herself didn't think to filter anything.] I don't, really. It's more like I'm just biding my time until he comes back. They have to bring him back at some point; that wouldn't make sense to keep him out after being here for so long, right?

[He feels somewhat compelled to filter the conversation. He finds it weird to just talk about these things where other people can listen in ... even if filtering it will only lock out people from the village.]

I'm sure he'll come back eventually. You just have to hold out on the hope that he also comes back remembering things.

He's come back once before. He was gone for a few months, but he came back and stayed a few years. It's that last part I'm worried about. There's...a lot that I'm afraid he won't remember.

Leon how many times have you watched people come and go?

...A lot of times. I've had friends from my world who have come here and disappeared, and so far haven't come back. [Rena. Ashton.] I don't like keeping track; it's really depressing if you have to think about it.

But you need to hope he comes back with his memories. Sometimes I wonder if that's the only reason I've come back with my memories -- because Haruki was here still hoping.

I know it's depressing, but sometimes I can't help it.

...it's possible. Does that mean you were here hoping Haruki would come back with his memories too?

It's difficult not to think about. That's why I like keeping busy, one way or another.

Yeah. I wanted to believe that, if what he did actually did make me come back with my memories intact, he would come back remembering Luceti if I kept hoping. It's kind of ridiculous, since I can believe he'd be possible of it -- but I wouldn't be able to replicate that.

Well if you ever need an assistant for whatever you're working on? Count me in.

It's not ridiculous when it's pretty possible...but it's just kind of like...it's like we got half-way there. All of the memories, just the wrong person. Like the wires got crossed. Makes me wonder if things would be different if I had more faith.

[He laughs faintly.] Sure. I'll contact you if I need a hand.

I don't know. But now it makes me wonder if anything would have changed if it was Haruki here instead of Haruhi.

What do you mean, like with things recently?

Like everything that's just happened in general since Haruhi arrived. I wonder if anything would have been different. Would they have the same ideas, the same kinds of inspiration. I mean, they don't think completely the same way.

[Like if he had said "love" to Haruki in any context, there would be a whole lot of weirdness there.]

Yeah, I've noticed. [It's the opposite for her.]

I think they'd be really close though, even if they weren't exactly the same. Think about it...they both ran the Brigade back home.

That's true... I guess Haruhi doesn't really run the Brigade differently from how Haruki did before.
