It was his job, actually. He was something called a Watcher. They spend all their school-time learning about creepy crawlies and apocalypses. Oh, and they learn a bunch of complicated old languages that no one with any sort normalness could ever pronounce.

So what was the point then?

To know enough so that when the the world needed saving from mystical doom, they'd be there to make sure the right things were done, I guess.

Yep, interesting is one word. But luckily, I don't have to inflict Giles on you. When I describe him as stuffy? I mean it. You can practically hear it in his voice, when he sits there and cleans his glasses in disapproval.

But your friend? Haruki, was it? He doesn't sound stuffy. He sounds...eccentric.

Ugh, trust me, I don't think we'd get along with each other at all. Stuffiness bothers me beyond belief usually.

Yeah...eccentric's one way to look at it. Oh! That was the other thing, did you want to drop by sometime this week for dinner? You know, that way you can see the eccentricity yourself. I mean keep in mind that he calls most people an idiot and his brain to mouth filter can be pretty small but, just a thought.

Oh, I absolutely want to stop by. I gotta see crazy for myself, first hand.

[And because Shiki's stubborn, she's up on her feet and using her crutches to go answer the door. Other than that, she looks fine.] Hey, you weren't kidding when you said you'd be here soon.

[Looking around, Buffy decides it looks a lot like what Giles house would look like if it had been hit by a tornado that only picked up and re-arranged his weirdo collection, but left everything else settled. She shrugs, then takes a casual seat on the arm of the couch, making sure to leave lots of room for the injured Shiki.]

Look, have you met Jim's friend, the doctor, yet? If he were here right now, I'm sure he'd tell you the same thing. Stay off it, do the healing thing.

[Shiki settles on the couch and props her leg up on the table, moving a pile of fabric and cotton out of the way as well] I know, I know. I haven't met the doctor though. Actually I didn't even know one of Jim's friends was here.

I think two of his crew are here, but I've only really gotten to know the doctor. He's a good guy, maybe a little standoffish. Very much a doctor, with the doctorly concern and atrocious bedside manner.

[So little regard for personal boundaries, Buffy begins to pick through some of the fabrics, admiring them.]

Have you been working out of here?

Huh...maybe I'll have to meet him sooner or later. And I should talk to Jim soon too, it's been a while.

Yup! Just little things here and there...nothing big.

He's nursing a broken arm, thanks to Angelus--Jim, I mean. You two can be broken bone buddies.

...sounds like a huge mess. Have you talked to him since last week?

We had a talk, it went...okay. He keeps saying things are fine but I keep freaking out in my head about all the what ifs. What if they're not fine? What if he thinks I'm a crazy person for having once dated a guy who occasionally goes arm-breaky crazy?

[She huffs, leaning back.] Here I am, spilling my guts when clearly you should be the one spilling.

The math guy. Does he know you're living here?

Buffy you're over-thinking, simple as that. I'm sure Jim doesn't think any of that.

Well, my place is just a short walk over the bridge--keep me on wacky journal speed dial and I can be here in a heartbeat if he turns up again. My bite is definitely worse than my bark.
